HARI RAYA GATHERING 2008

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2008

Temasekians celebrated Hari Raya with a gathering of students, teachers and parents on the 23rd of
October. It was organised by the Department of Malay Language to strengthen bonds within the community. The event, initiated by the students themselves, came alive with the presence of the students togged in multi-coloured traditional outfits. It was a joyous occasion made auspicious by the presence of Guest-of-Honour, Dr Bibi Jan, President of Singapore Malay Teachers’ Group.

Head of Department for Mother Tongue, Ms Fong Lai San, presented a speech peppered with a smattering of Malay which she picked up at the eleventh hour, much to the appreciation of all present. Dr Bibi Jan gave a 20-minute motivational talk encouraging the students to “be the best that you can be” and to “live life to the fullest with spirit and vigour!” Dessy of Sec 1/7 as well as her other schoolmates, felt that the talk was “very motivating and educational”.

Emceed by the spontaneous duo Dhimas Aryo and Adele Teh, both of Sec 3/1,  followed by numerous performances by the students. An impressive Malay Poem Declaration by Victor Lee started the ball rolling followed by singing duo Yasmin and Aisyah. There were several entertaining group singers, a guitar performance and the popular Dikir Barat  -  “our  favourite”, declared Hamizah and Kamilayni of Sec 1/5. The game segment featured a ‘Hari Raya songs’ version of “Don’t forget the lyrics” with hilarious results!

All guests were treated to a buffet spread including traditional Hari Raya biscuits and kuehs. As aptly put by Haikal, Ita and Nurin of Sec 3/9  - “The atmosphere was ‘Happening’!”
