PSG GET - TOGETHER (9TH MARCH 2013)

TUESDAY, 23 APRIL, 2013

The PSG had their first meeting of the year on Saturday March 9 with the main intention of welcoming new members, especially Sec.1 parents. It was very well attended by school staff, including the Principal Mr.Tan Chee Siong, the Vice Principals and PSG members.
Dr.Patrick Fernandez, the PSG Chairman, gave the opening address and promised us an interesting Programme. There was much excitement and laughter as everyone participated in the Ice Breaker Bingo Game conducted by Mrs.Anne Ambrose. It was a fun time of discovering little known facts about each other. Now we know whom to invite for shopping sprees and durian feasts!Afterwards,Mrs Lim Swu Yun announced the Parenting Workshop 'How to talk so that your teens will listen' on April 20 and encouraged us to attend.

Principal Mr.Tan shared surveyed data that unlike primary school children who love having their parents involved in their school lives, secondary school children may not always appreciate having their parents around in school but will definitely benefit more when parents and school staff work closely together.Mrs.Kamala Menon's rendition of 2 songs,'Child ' and 'From a Distance',with guitar accompaniment, blew us away! She shared that she chose the songs to depict the love and sacrifice of parents and encouraged us not to be discouraged by petty disappointments.

Mr.Segar,ex PSG Chairman, reminded us that 'life is not a bullet train'.What is most important is our long-term relationship with our children. He listed 3 important points for us to keep in mind as we navigate the challenging teen years. We need to talk openly about boy-girl relationships, have mutual love, respect, patience and appreciation which should be anchored in strong family values. He shared how his children matured within the Temasek family to become wonderful youths with great aspirations.Their academic improvement from depressing results to outstanding achievements, coupled with good morals and ethics were greatly encouraging to all. Mr.Segar acknowledged and thanked the School Counselor Mrs.Lalitha Kok for playing an invaluable role in this transformation.

Mrs.Jacinta Yeo, the Art teacher, talked about the Art Outreach Programme that is open to all students and staff. She presented an interesting overview of the project and invited PSG members and their families to participate in their next project on March 18.Ms.Sophie Bochot, the PSG Assistant Treasurer updated parents on the Overseas Community Involvement Programme (OCIP) to Laos and Cambodia this May.The students would be helping out with construction work, painting, gardening ,cooking and teaching English.Sophie and Ms.Helen Wee will be accompanying the students and teachers-in-charge.There will be fund-raising projects this April with a target of $15000 to be raised per team.

PSG Alumni Ms.Helen Wee has also recently volunteered her time and effort in maintaining the School's Herb Garden and encouraged interested parents to come alongside with her and exercise their green fingers with the promise of aromatic fresh herbs as a reward ,upon harvesting!
After a short lunch,we were entertained by an upbeat dance performed by 5 awesome and enthusiastic PSG mothers, namely,Zek,Lela,Hemal,Helen and Junaidah. As the meeting drew to a close, several parents commented positively about their impressions of PSG.

For example,Ms.Karenza was impressed by the close- knit family spirit and Mr.Raihan felt welcome and enjoyed the heartwarming fellowship. Ms.Zek and Ms.Lela were proud that they were able to motivate other sporting mothers to join them in the dance  item. They were also actively recruiting models for the International Friendship Day Costume/Fashion Show in April. Many of us have already marked our calendars for the upcoming PSG events and are eagerly looking forward to meeting each other again.
