CELEBRATING LUNAR NEW YEAR

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2011

For 11 scholars from Temasek Secondary School, 4 February was a special day of warmth and hospitality.
Mrs Joreen Low and her wonderful husband, Mr Low Kok Poo, hosted the scholars for a time of food, fellowship and festivities.

The day began with a warm smile at the door of the apartment and sincere wishes of  New Wear greetings. The home was elegantly furnished with antique furniture and Asian pieces. The scholars also met and gave their well-wishes to and received “ang paos” from Mr Low’s mother, an immigrant from Swatow, China, who happened to be from a region close to many of the scholars. It was particularly touching to see some of the senior scholars communicating in their native dialect.

A tour of the house showed that Mr Low, Liang Wei (Temasek Alumnus of 2008) and his brother were actively involved in healthy living in cycling and running, espousing the 7 Disciplines of Keep Strong! which they also displayed at home. They also had their personal version of “facebook”, featuring pictures

The festivities continued with the Lows inviting a Lion Dance to usher in good fortune into their home. The single lion performed an engaging dance and interacted with the children in the hall as well, leaving the wish of “prosperity” formed with oranges when it left!

Apart from New Year treats, the scholars were given a sumptuous meal, lovingly prepared by the Lows and their help. The meal included fried chicken, Korean noodles and “tang yuan”.

The scholars had a wonderful time and experienced the warmth and love of family in Singapore. Although they were far from home, the Lows gave them an unforgettable opportunity to remember what it was like to be with loved ones. Many thanks to Mr and Mrs Low, Liang Wei and his brother for hosting the scholars this CNY
