MATHEMATICS EDUCATION THROUGH ONLINE PORTAL

SATURDAY, APRIL 10, 2010

Want to learn Mathematics in a fun way? That is what the Mathematics Department of Temasek Secondary

School shared with parents of Secondary 1 to 3 students on 10 April 2010.  The enthusiastic Mathematics teachers conducted an introductory course on the use of the Online Portal (ACE-Learning) to enhance the learning and teaching of Mathematics in school. Besides gaining an insight on how the Online Portal is incorporated in everyday teaching and learning of Mathematics, parents are shown the various functions and features available, and also have hands-on experience working on the portal.

This Online Portal uses animated and interesting video lessons to capture the students’ attention when explaining the Mathematics concepts. Students (and parents too!) can learn and/or revise their concepts via interactive and interesting methods. Examples with full solutions and explanations are given, and students can review them at their own pace. Besides downloading lesson notes or worksheets, students can review the video lessons used in class and do the practice drills for each topic.

Allowing students to access the lessons at their own time and revisiting the lessons which they are weak in as often as they require encourages independent learning. In addition to tracking online homework, the portal also allows the monitoring and tracking of the students’ performances in online quizzes and assignments. All concerned parents can now go onto the portal to find out what and how their kids have been coping in the subject. Teachers can also access the results of their students and micro-manage the areas of weakness of their students if necessary.

This interactive portal certainly adds an interesting dimension to the learning and teaching of Mathematics in school. May we look forward to having more of such e-learning portals for other subjects too!
