THE GRAND CARNIVAL

SATURDAY, MARCH 13, 2010

To commemorate Temasek Secondary’s 30th Anniversary, one of the big events which the school organizedwas The Grand Carnival. Held on 13 March 2010, the school looked vibrant with an array of colours inline with the theme ‘Colours of Temasek’. The students wore T-shirts bearing red, gold and blue representing the school colours. The canteen was divided into individual stalls decorated creatively by the students. There was “Istanbul Delights” selling chicken kebabs, a Japanese stall selling sushi and others selling pratas, satays, bubble teas, candy floss, ice-cream, chocolate fondues and the list goes on.
Not to be outdone, our very own PSG member Mr Chegne How Poon together with his wife and several other members, decorated our nasi lemak stall with coconuts, fake banana leaves, fresh chilies brought from home, cucumbers, batik sarongs and fans. Our beautifully decorated stall received numerous compliments. The school gates opened at 9.30am for the crowds and we sold all 300 packets of nasi lemak before 1pm! Quite a feat indeed!

The tremendous support from all PSG members present, coupled with our chairperson Segar’s antics in trying to cajole the crowd wearing a ‘food-cover’ hat (tudung saji) to patronise our stall, as well as Vice-chairperson Vicky’s presence although she was nursing a cold, contributed to the overall success of our booth.

Chegne summed it up best when he said, “Simply a must-attend Carnival. Very enjoyable, with scrumptious food Students, teachers and parents did a fantastic job. Personally, my family and I enjoyed the entire Carnival. Selling Nasi Lemak, getting the stall ready and seeing that we ‘sold out’ even though we had lots to sell, was indeed rewarding!”

Guest-of-honour, Mr Abdullah Tarmugi, graced the occasion and accepted a cheque for $60,000 from the Principal, Mrs Ong, for the President’s Challenge. The slight drizzle did not dampen the spirits of all present as the DJ spun music.  Many participants also walked away with prizes from the Lucky Draw segment; the first prize was won by a secondary one student who walked away with a bicycle. The Game booths were packed with adults and children alike trying their luck. The Haunted House at the Learning Hub was a big draw as the queue snaked all the way to the staircase.

Students manning the ice-cream booth had their concerns allayed when the sky cleared and the sun peeped through the clouds to allow scores of visitors to enjoy their day.
Kudos to the organising committee and to all students involved for the huge success of the Carnival!!
