“WE SHARE” SESSION: “COMMUNICATING WELL WITH YOUR CHILDREN”

SATURDAY, MARCH 6, 2010

One parent shared from her heart about taking advantage of the ‘travel journey from home to school’ to chat about issues with her son.  Another makes time for each of her 3 children independently, doing things they enjoy … while sensibly ensuring that the time is not perceived as a ‘routine or chore’ for the kids. Then yet another parent shared how he altered his lifestyle to fit his children’s - although being an outdoor person, plays LAN games with his kids, just to have that quality time together. The rich sharing from the parents kept flowing on from one facet to another, all under the theme of communication with our kids.  There was so much to learn from each other.
And, that’s what we did on that 6 March 2010, Saturday morning, at Temasek’s Learning Hub.  Approximately 32 parents (parents of Sec 1 to Sec 4) attended the “We Share” session … and Mr Segar, the Chair of Temasek PSG was truly appreciative and excited that 2010 will continue to be amazing, with such an encouraging turn up.

Mr. Daniel Ang and Mrs. Lalita Kok, the facilitators for the session helped us examine and evaluate our communication levels with our kids; which was very useful. Interestingly, we seem to share a common journey. For instance, the 6 top things that we parents are doing well are: (1) Making time, listening and do things together (communications), (2) Respecting and Apologising, (3) Empathy, (4) Freedom and Trust, (5) Praise and Affirmation and (6) Getting to know peers. It was very refreshing and comforting to know that the things we are currently experiencing with our kids are not unique to us only but are experienced by other parents as well.  Even Mrs Ong, Principal of Temasek, whom we may sometimes forget is a mother herself, shared about her relationship with her 2 boys, … the lessons we can learn from each other’s journey is  truly valuable.  Needless to say we found the ‘We Share’ session tremendously beneficial. Do join us for the next one!
